Maluma has gone from local singer in his hometown of Medellín,
Colombia to an international sensation with his brand of Latin crooning,
collaborating with legendary acts across genres along the way. His
breakout stateside single, Hawái, was remixed as a collab with The
Weekend. “I feel like these artists are my masters, my teachers. I try and
take little things from each artist that I work with.” The 27-year-old’s
latest album Siete Días en Jamaica came out on in January.

Stream one of his live performances or his music videos and it becomes abundantly clear that Maluma has a bit of charisma. It's what led Jennifer Lopez to select Maluma to star alongside her and Owen Wilson in Marry Me, coming out next year. “I've loved acting since I was a kid,” he says. “So everything about it, I love.” A highlight from his first time on a movie set? “Meeting Owen Wilson. The day I met him, my life changed.”

Maluma’s foundation El Arte de los Sueños (The Art of Dreams) is committed to giving back to the city that made him: Medellín. The charity connects the city's at-risk youth with arts programming in an effort to give the kids creative outlets and opportunities. “We take these kids from the hood, these kids that don’t have many choices and give them this chance,” says Maluma. “We give them art lessons, dance lessons and singing lessons. We try to give them some hope.”

Bold experimentation has been a hallmark of Maluma’s personal style. Just look
at the stream of style choices, from pearl-detailed suiting to his ever-changing
hair color. All on display on his Instagram feed. He takes a no-holds-back
approach to his style: “I feel like we have a gift that we don't explore and that’s
experimentation. Every time I go to a barbershop I’m like, what’s the thing no one
has already. I feel like being different is empowering.” The fashion world has
taken notice and embraced Maluma's style, culminating in a collaboration with
Balmain dropping later this spring.

Born Juan Luis Londoño Arias, Maluma’s stage name is a mashup of his immediate family’s first names. His sister Manuela helps run the foundation. And his parents have supported his individuality since he was little. “When I was a kid, my mom says I used to go to the closet and pick my own outfits. My family, they were very free with me, with the way I think. I was a very happy kid and I've been a very happy guy.”
